In some of the villages of the Vanuatu islands, time stands still. There is no electricity, nor roads, nor money. With its eruptions and showers of black dust, the volcano Yasur conditions the life of the islanders that have learnt to respect and understand its spirit. The important stages of life are marked by ceremony, where the entire village comes together to prepare an ancient food, the lap lap, cooked over red-hot stones. On the mountains, there lives a tribe where, according to the dictates of tradition, the men where only the namba, a penile cover, and the women only grass skirts.
On the summit of the volcano Yasur, the explosions follow one another day and night, with fascinating and apocalyptical effects. On the island of Tanna, men and animals make the most of the volcano, the warm and sulphurous water and the lukewarm land. Together with the volcano god there are other forms of religion: from followers of the prophet who predicted the drying of the lake, to those of John Brum, who dance awaiting his return. Finally, in a pagan festival, among song and dance, they kill hundreds of pigs in a propitiatory rite of peace between the tribes.
